China vs Italy for eyewear manufacturing
Choose the factory that can repeatedly make your frame, at your volume and quality level. Italy and China both contain very different suppliers. Country is one variable in a decision that also includes technical capability, communication, supply-chain visibility and the economics of repeat orders.
Start with the collection, not the country
A machined acetate frame with complex lamination presents a different sourcing problem from a lightweight injected sports frame. Write down the manufacturing route, hinge architecture, finish, lens specification and expected order by model and colour before comparing suppliers.
Ask for examples of comparable production and the actual location of each critical operation. An office address or a polished sample room does not tell you who cuts the acetate, inserts the hinges, finishes the surfaces or assembles the frame.
Compare evidence on the same dimensions
| Decision | What to establish in either country |
|---|---|
| Material and process | Specific acetate or resin grade, component sources and proven process |
| Development support | Who translates design intent into drawings, tooling and fit samples |
| Minimum order | Minimum per model, colour, material and reorder |
| Quality | Acceptance sample, measurement method and defect agreement |
| Delivery | Sampling slots, production slot, shipping route and buffer |
| Commercial position | Payment milestones, currency, ownership and change costs |
Compare landed cost, not ex-factory price
Use: product cost + packaging + freight + insurance + applicable import costs + inspection + expected rework. Keep recoverable taxes separate from economic cost while allowing for their cash-flow timing. Ask a qualified logistics adviser to confirm the treatment for your route.
A lower ex-factory price may be offset by additional sampling, freight, inspection or rework. Build a side-by-side comparison using quotations for the same frame specification, quantity and delivery basis. List one-off development charges separately from recurring production costs. A country label alone does not establish which offer is commercially stronger.
When proximity or scale changes the decision
An Italy-based team may find factory visits and sample reviews easier with a nearby partner. That benefit has value when fit and finish need repeated discussion. A supplier farther away may still offer better process expertise or an established component ecosystem for the particular construction.
For either option, ask how communication works when a sample fails. A named technical contact, marked-up drawings and one consolidated revision list matter more than quick sales replies. Plan the calendar around confirmed factory availability and shipping, not assumptions about national lead times.
Make a two-factory comparison before committing
Send the same technical package to two credible candidates. Score sample quality, engineering feedback, quotation completeness and responsiveness separately. A very low price with unresolved material substitutions is not yet a comparable offer.
If country of origin is part of the brand story, obtain evidence of the relevant operations and specialist advice on the claim before using it. Buying Italian acetate does not by itself prove where the finished frame was made. Keep sourcing claims as precise as the documents supporting them.
